This is an important textbook, more profound in its approach than anything else I have seen in the field of road safety. Ezra Hauer's ambition is obviously to turn the study of road safety into a proper science, and he has come a long way in doing that.

The book is certainly needed. Hauer does not respect the 'received wisdom', but asks fundamental questions and shows how frustatingly difficult they are to answer. ...Hauer is an excellent teacher... His extensive use of numerical examples in the book makes it easy for readers to check their understanding of the mathematical models that are presented.

[Hauer's] unique combination of analytical rigour and a sparkling writing style, interspersed occasionally with elegant polemics, cheers me up. It makes real fun to read.

Must-reading for those conducting safety studies

This is one of the best technical books I've ever read on any subject--and I've read many of them! It should be must reading not only for those who conduct transportation safety studies--the subject of the book-- but also for those conducing any observational study ("before/after study"), whether safety-related or not.

This book is a valuable and much-needed contribution to the technical literature. The book begins by showing how classical statistical techniques are often misused in observational studies. Classical techniques assume a rigorous experimental design, with random assignment to treatment and non-treatement groups. These conditions do not apply to observational studies, such as those determining the influence of smoking on health. Errors such as assuming safety in the immediate "before" period is a good predictor of safety in the "after" period are discussed. The book then goes on to provide valid techniques that work. It shows how to compare the what would have been the safety in the after period without treatment, to the safety that was achieved. Complications of assessing the safety in the before and after periods are addressed.

The book is not only an important technical contribution, it is also extremely well-written. The author's writing style is extremely lucid and should serve as an example to others. The first section of the book provides a qualitative description of the material. Subsequent sections then repeat the material, but with mathemtatical rigor. Numerous numerical examples (some with real-world data; others with hypothetcial data for simplicity sake) make the material clear. Mathematical dervivations are provided for rigor, but isolated from the rest of the text to keep from overwhelming the reader.

The author writes with a conversational style, frequently re-emphasizing important points. He takes care to show at all points where he is in the logical discussion and how the current topic fits in to the overall picture. Some of the words are written tongue in cheek. My favorite is his description that

"they do not have a problem of congnition, but only of brittle bones".

In short, the book is outstanding for both its technical content and for the way the material is presented.

I wanted a book that would give me the information I needed to get started and to be able to converse with our accountant intelligently without complete confusion. This book was all that I was looking for, and in fact, is proving to be a fantastic reference manual for any questions that arise concerning payroll. The book is affordable, easy to read and understand, and accurate in every detail so far. For the small business owner, this is an excellent primer. There are plenty of computer payroll programs out there, but it still helps to understand the basics such as percentages, when deposits need to be made, how much, and quarterly reports.

If You Don't Use a Payroll Service Third-Party at Your Business, a Good Read

This book is well-written, but my wife ordered it to understand her client's thinking when they set up their payroll systems. She found that while it was an easy read, it tended to be a bit repetitive at some points. It really lays out what one should do in order to set up a payroll system, but she felt it lacked some emphasis on why internal controls are important, and a lot of the points are redundant in a world where many business are using payroll services such as ADP or Paychex (which is increasingly popular even for the smallest mom-and-pop business in our region).

You've done it again, Mr. Maltz.

One of the first copies of Maxwell Maltz's book, Psycho-Cybernetics is still, to this day, on my bookshelf.

In 1961, It did much more than just put me on my quest for self-improvement. For the very first time, someone connected the mind to the body and brought home the old, simple adage ... "Change your Mind and you change your life!"

That was Psycho-Cybernetics. That was the principle of Self Image Psychology ... proven and verified by science itself as an irresistible and powerful no nonsense psychology of happiness and fulfillment.

From there on ... for decades ... everything else that was printed in the Self Help Industry became supporting commentary for the principles in this book.

An now ... the new "enhanced" version of Psycho-Cybernetics just arrived. And Yesssss!!! I enjoyed this one as much as the original. If not more so!

Comparing the two, the new authors kept the voice and the insights of the original text intact, integrating only the updates needed for new generations to come to experience and cherish the joy of reading this old, new classic for the first time. That which doesn't kill you really does make you stronger... it's just a matter of how you choose to see things.

One of the best self help books I've ever read... written in the 60's by a plastic surgeon to help those still disfigured after reconstructive surgery get on with life, it will give you skills to accept and be at peace with almost anything life will ever dump on you. Once you read this you will realize how many recent best sellers just regurgitate knowledge and wisdom that was already available 50 years to centuries ago, now for the sake of making a buck.

This was recommended to me back in 1976 when I was 19, has made all the difference in the world, has also made a profound difference to everyone I have ever suggested this to and helped through crisis (and still do now, 2016.) When everyone is running around with their heads cut off you'll be the calm one wondering what the fuss is all about... able to maintain perspective and focused on what's important and needs to be done personally and professionally when either or both worlds seem to be falling in on you... I've more than survived brain damage (more than once) , divorce, career ending disability, cancer, premature death of those closest to me.. things I never expected... and can say that which doesn't kill you really does make you stronger if you happen to have the right set of coping skills in your bag of tricks. When people marvel how I just keep on going and wonder how I do it.... and I say... read this book... Every moment you are alive is a gift, that's why its called the present. be happy, be well... make the most of what you do have.

I've come across and read a lot from people like Jack Canfield

I've been on a self-help reading kick for about the past year. Between issues in my finances, health, relationships, career, I was being weighed down by it all. I've come across and read a lot from people like Jack Canfield, Joel Osteen, Law of Attraction - Teachings of Abraham, etc. They were all good, uplifting and helpful works in their own right, but something was missing. I was listening to a podcast and the host mentioned this book, which was something I've never heard about - ever or anywhere. I looked it up on Amazon and decided to order it. I am sure glad I did. For me, it brought all of the other ideas, concepts and practices together. Things like affirmations, burning desires, faith, action - they all are great, as long as they're operating in conjunction with the way you see yourself and want to see yourself. This book really stresses the importance of focusing on your self-image, which is something I've found many of the other works glossed over or lacked. It's a good work, laced with some biblical references which aren't overwhelming. If you can spend the money on it, it is certainly a great addition to your library. I've recommended it to everyone.

Valuable Contribution to the Literature

This book fills and important hole in the literature: a solid, up-to-date, in-print grammar of the Urdu language. I have used it to supplement my study of other Urdu texts.
I have a few minor quibbles with the book:
1) The Urdu transcription system is not given explicitly. Reference is made to R. S. McGregor's Urdu Study Materials, an out-of-print book published in India. While it may be readily available in major centers of learning or through interlibrary loan, I think that reference to an out-of print book for something as significant as the transcription system should be avoided. Perhaps in future editions the system should be included in the text.
2) Sections appear where reference is made to 'ko' marking objects and 'ko' marking subjects. I'm not sure that this is the best way to address the use of 'ko', since it is more a comment on peculiarities of English grammar than any feature of Urdu. In Russian there are similar impersonal structures that use dative objects for what we would consider subjects in the English translations. A simpler approach to the issue of 'ko' might be to say that it marks dative objects, which may, however, be translated into English by words having different grammatical roles in the corresponding English sentence.
Incidentally, I also have the "Teach Yourself Urdu" book and have found it of value, though not for its grammatical descriptions, which don't seem to me to be a distinguishing strength. I have collected the Urdu texts of the dialogues into a notebook that I find useful for rapid reading practice.

Useful but limited

This is a reference grammar of a traditional informal type. It provides much information about how different things are said, including such specialized constructions as dates and times, with numerous examples. It has a detailed index and a fair amount of cross-referencing. Examples are provided both in Arabic script and in romanization.

A small complaint is that the romanization is not explained. Instead, a reference is given to another book, one that can hardly be expected to be on every student's shelf.

The main problem with this book is that it is weak on analysis and generalization. It is appropriate that a book intended for non-linguists learning Urdu should avoid excessive use of technical terminology and formalization, but the author's descriptions of grammatical constructions are so vague that one often cannot tell what is possible and what is not, or when exactly the contruction or form is used. For example, in native Urdu noun phrases, most modifiers of the noun precede the noun. In particular, genitive phrases precede the noun, so that "Rahim's daughter" is "Rahim kii beTii" that is: Rahim GEN daughter. Urdu also has another construction, the izaafat construction, which is borrowed from Persian. In this construction, the order is reversed. The izaafat equivalent of the above would be: "beTii e Rahim": daughter of Rahim. So, is the izaafat construction simply a variant of the Noun Phrase in which the order of possessor and possessed is switched, otherwise like other, native, Urdu Noun Phrases? This book never answers that question. In fact, the answer is no. izaafats cannot have any other internal modifiers, such as adjectives or relative clauses. This is but one example of many. You get a general idea of what a construction looks like, but all too often you don't get enough information to be able to use the construction with any confidence or to have a good idea of what to expect.

Similarly, I found the explanation of when the different tenses and aspects of the verb are used to be excessively vague. Some technical terms, such as "habitual" and "punctual" are used, but rather sloppily, not in their established technical senses.

The book does not justify the analysis given, even where the reader may wonder about it. For example, "experiencer" subjects typically take the postposition ko. Schmidt refers to these as "dative subjects". Some readers will wonder if these are really subjects. There is evidence that they are, for example the fact that they can be antecedants of apnaa "self", but this is not discussed.

All in all, there is a good deal of useful information in this book, but it is not the sort of detailed, comprehensive, reference grammar that answers all, or at least most, of the questions one has about a language.

Who this book works for

Mr. Poser's review missed the point of this book, I think. Having studied from Barker off and on over many years, I passed over Essential Urdu both at conferences and libraries until the other day when I checked it out just to.... check it out. I haven't been able to put it down; I even read it while I'm cooking.
Despite the reviewer, Mr. Prendergast, who said the book was good for beginners, too, I believe it is my vague familiarity with Urdu which gives the book so much impact on my understanding of how the language works. IMHO, only a linguistically sophisticated person would grasp the import of the fascinating structures found in everyday Urdu, let alone in the many borrowing from Arabic, Persian, Hindi, English, and so on. (One of my great frustrations is that when I trot out a new Urdu word for, say, school registration, my friends say, "Oh, we just say 'registration'").

To be fair to Mr. Poser's complaints, I do believe it is my wide if not deep readings in linguistics plus my study of Barker and others, including the Russian Klyuyev, that allow me to 'fill in' some of the gaps he cites. So, indeed, it may not be for beginners.

But let me cite some elements of the book that I found so enlightening and helpful. The sections on particles and interjections, courtesy forms,
time and dates, and causatives were particularly useful to me. Let me be clear here, I am comparing this book to all other such manuals; it could be that all in this series are as careful about covering as many aspects of speech as possible, but my experience of many years in using grammar manuals of many languages is that these elements are often skipped or slighted, or, at least, not presented in a compact way.

And I think it is this latter point that is both a strength and a bit of a put-off in the book. The long pages of forms are not a way to learn those forms; they must be learned through use, not memorization. But as Prof. Schmidt lays the paradigms out, it does clarify them for the person who already has some of the forms internalized through use.

So, for me, reading and annotating this book for my use has been a series of epiphanies. I especially liked the examples of how the play of transitive/intransitive and causative forms allows a range of expression typically represented in English by totally different words. In teaching Spanish, I found it important to explain how Spanish vocabulary, smaller in toto than that of English, supplements meaning through derivation. This section explains how causatives do that in Urdu (not to say Urdu's lexicon is small by any means!).

I recall when an eminent scholar of Urdu was so kind as to e-mail me about my on-again, off-again study of the language and tell me that the language was pretty simple. When I responded that the morphology may be simple compared to Russian or Latin, but that Urdu more than compensates in the complexity of word-formation and syntax. You have only to read Prof. Schmidt's helpful gathering of ways to express obligation, probability, and so on, to realize that.

The features Mr. Poser wants delved into more would be appropriate, IMHO, for one of Routledge's Comprehensive series, and that is a hint to Routledge.
