The purpose of this book is to introduce algebraic topology using the novel approach of homotopy theory, an approach with clear applications in algebraic geometry as understood by Lawson and Voevodsky. This method allows the authors to cover the material more efficiently than the more common method using homological algebra. The basic concepts of homotopy theory, such as fibrations and cofibrations, are used to construct singular homology and cohomology, as well as K-theory. Throughout the text many other fundamental concepts are introduced, including the construction of the characteristic classes of vector bundles. Although functors appear constantly throughout the text, no knowledge about category theory is expected from the reader. This book is intended for advanced undergraduates and graduate students with a basic knowledge of point set topology as well as group theory and can be used in a two semester course.
Marcelo Aguilar and Carlos Prieto are Professors at the Instituto de Matemticas, Universidad Nacional Aut�noma de M�xico, and Samuel Gitler is a member of El Colegio Nacional and professor at the Centro de Investigaci�n y Estudios Avanzados del IPN.

A good primer for present moment awareness

This is a fast read and concise description of present moment awareness. He touches the high points, but does not dwell on any of the higher consciousness states for very long. Basically, if you are unfamiliar with these principles, you will get a good start by reading this book. But, if you are an advanced practitioner, there will be very little here for you. If you have difficulty reading Eckhart Tolle, this book will help give you a good idea of what present moment awareness is. However, as a stand alone work, it falls short.

Dennis Baxter, sound designer for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games, has thirty years experience in live television sound, and has been the sound designer for the Atlanta, Sydney, Salt Lake, Athens, Torino, and Beijing Olympic Games. I recommend this book to all new A2s. It assumes you know "audio", so deep technical writing is bypassed for a broad and comprehensive depiction of the responsibilities and tools with which an A2 must be acquainted. Read it cover to cover; when you're on the job it'll be as if you've been there and done that. Throughout the book you'll be introduced to folks already working in the television audio world; May you find yourself working with them someday!

Best Brittany travel book

The definitive travel book on Brittany. At 632 pages it is certainly the most comprehensive. While most travel books assume that tourists do little more than travel from city to city to see cathedrals and museums, Barbour's Brittany gives equal time to the countryside. He is opinionated and tells you where the most beautiful parts are Brittany are to be found and what to avoid. We planned our three-week trip to Brittany around his recommendations and were elated. Our landlord (we utilized the book's information to rent a gite) was amazed that we had been to places he considered to be the most beautiful spots when they require traveling along unpaved roads without signposts. We were delighted to find that the bargains he recommended were terrific. For example, we followed his advice and went to a Breton festival in the remote village of Spezet, which was outstanding. The bargain hotel in Spezet he recommended was excellent. He not only gives his opinionated and accurate recommendations, he provides actual prices as opposed to the vague pricing categories of most other guides. We followed his advice and avoided the congested touristy locales as much as possible. When we were unable to avoid them, it was painfully apparent why he was warning his readers away. If you're going to Brittany, buy this book. Considering the high cost of travel, it's foolish not to have at least one good guide book and this is the best by far of the four I bought.

Traveling Companion

Philippe Babour's Brittany is guide with an obsessive attention to detail and content. Of the six hundred or so pages, probably 50% to 60% are filled with history and lore. The book scores high marks as a companion guide to The Miclelin Green Guide or to the 60 or so pages on Brittany and Nantes within the Lonely Planet's guide to France. Barbour logically arranges his sections geographically, connects them together, and contrasts them. Both The Lonely Planet and Barbour have nice sections on housing-hotel areas and specific hotel recommendations, and Barbour does the best. The Lonely Planet is, unfortunately, focused on one-star places and below, but Barbour casts a wide net.
Barbour's Brittany is a solid 4-star performer in the area of trip planning. However, it cannot stand-alone and be the only guidebook to Brittany that you will ever need. Different from Michelin's Green Guide, there are neither maplets with driving instructions of the areas nor photographs. It makes sense to get a visual glimpse of the area if you have never been there before, but Barbour paints only lavish word pictures that don't really prioritize one area in comparison to another. He has very strong opinions and is not shy conveying them to the reader. This generally presents a nice style and personality to the book. Occasionally, however, Barbour becomes mean-spirited and makes direct attacks against specific people and places. Discount that, and it is a fine book to plan your trip to Brittany.

Very good history of Sweden covering the 400 years up to the 1920s. Emphasizes that Sweden has been always part of the larger European economy and culture. Details how Sweden was a good bit more backward than England & France a few hundred years ago. Goes some way toward explaining how it came to be prosperous in recent times. Recommended even if you're not interested in Sweden itself. This is an abridged version of a much larger work.

Martin Fridson's How to Be a Billionaire sets its sights much higher, and therefore seems an even more appropriate (if somewhat less realistic) goal for today's tycoon wannabes. There are some 200 individuals in the U.S. alone who now breathe this rarefied air, writes Merrill Lynch managing director Fridson, and no reason why those who adopt their philosophies cannot join them. To that end, he studied more than a dozen of the self-made super-rich, including Sam Walton, Bill Gates, Wayne Huizenga, and Warren Buffett. An Excellent Starting Point!

Mr. Fridson has clearly dissected for us all the possible ways of achieving a net worth beyond a billion. The book is written in a clear, concise manner. It's almost like a tree diagram, if you will. Meaning the goals are like the nodes of the tree and the pathways to get to the goals are like the interconnections in a tree diagram.
He has backed up each section and node with examples of individuals who have travelled those paths such as H.L. Hunt, Ross Perot, Sam Walton, John D. Rockefeller, Bill Gates, Paul Getty, and Warren Buffet just to name a few. This book is an extremely good starting point if you would like to reach the top ranks in net worth. As the author correctly points out, we are lucky to have such a book in existence today, since even a decade ago people were not lucky enough to have a powerful source of information at their disposal.
A word of caution for the individuals in the investment field: Mr. Fridson points out and proves that to amass billions just by mere investments is not possible. He proves that to achieve billions in the investment field, one must acquire a substantial stake in a company and control the management and the direction of the company as a whole. This is precisely what Warren Buffett has accomplished (in despite of the common myth that he is just an investor).
The book is concluded in what I would say the most beautiful chapter. This is where we realize that tenacity and perseverence are traits ascribed to the great fortune builders. More than loving the money, self-made billionaires love the pursuit of money. We learn here that ordinary efforts and conventional approaches do not produce extraordinary results. One needs to do things differently and persistently to outmanage the competition.
To sum up, this is the greatest book (if not the only one) to teach us the pathways to amass billions and leaves the choices to us as to which path we like to follow to get there.

This book cuts to the chase!

How To Be A Billionare is a book that doesn't bore you with biographies on celebrity businessmen or feed you a bunch of new-age psychobable. With chapters on how to influence politicians and deal with unions, this is a must read for anyone serious about getting rich.

I can tell you first hand that these concepts and strategies are key to growing a business and creating wealth. While building a real estate holding company with $25,000,000 in assets in less than 5 years many of the concepts in this book were a big help.

Take this excerpt which illustrates the point of being tough, having thick skin and self confidence:

"In a classic confrontation over Icahn's hostile bid for Phillps Petroleum, Morgan Stanley investment banker Joe Fogg declared the proposal preposterous. "What the hell do you know about the oil business?" he demanded to know. "You don't understand, Joe," Ichan calmly replied, "I'm not here for an interview"

I wend out and bought, "King Icahan: The Biography of a Renegade Capitalist" by Mark Stevens as soon as I read those lines.
