About the Author
Nicholas Monsarrat was born in Liverpool and educated at Cambridge University, where he studied law. His career as a solicitor encountered a swift end when he decided to leave Liverpool for London, with a half-finished manuscript under his arm and �40 in his pocket. His first book to attract attention was the largely autobiographical 'This is the Schoolroom'. During World War Two he joined the Royal Navy and served in the corvettes. His war experience provided the framework for the novel 'HMS Marlborough will enter Harbour', one of his best known books. 'The Cruel Sea' was made into a classic film starring Jack Hawkins. Established as a top name writer Monsarrat's writing career concluded with 'The Master Mariner'. Well known for his concise story telling and tense narrative, he became one of the most successful novelists of the twentieth century, whose rich and varied collection bears the hallmarks of a truly gifted writer.

A Collection of Somewhat Interesting Short Stories

This book is a collection of short stories, most not having to do with the sea. They are somewhat interesting and most have some sort of reference to World War II veterans. Some of the stories were better than others, but overall I had some trouble getting through the book.

About the Author

Frank Schmalleger, Ph.D., is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, where he taught criminal justice courses for 20 years and chaired the university’s Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Criminal Justice for 16 of those years. In 1991 the university awarded him the title of Distinguished Professor, and the university named him Professor Emeritus in 2001.

Dr. Schmalleger holds degrees from the University of Notre Dame and Ohio State University, having earned both a master’s (1970) and a doctorate in sociology (1974) with a special emphasis in criminology from Ohio State University.

As an adjunct professor with Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri, Schmalleger helped develop the university’s graduate program in security administration and loss prevention. He taught courses in that curriculum for more than a decade. Schmalleger also taught in the online graduate program of the New School for Social Research, helping to build the world’s first electronic classrooms in support of distance learning through computer telecommunications. An avid Web user, Schmalleger is the creator of a number of award-winning websites, including one that supports this textbook.

Frank Schmalleger is the author of numerous articles and many books, including the widely used Criminal Justice Today (Pearson, 2015), Criminology Today (Pearson, 2015); Criminal Law Today (Pearson, 2014), and The Definitive Guide to Criminal Justice and Criminology on the World Wide Web (Pearson, 2009).

Schmalleger is also founding editor of the journal Criminal Justice Studies. He �has served as editor for the Pearson series Criminal Justice in the Twenty-First Century and as imprint adviser for Greenwood Publishing Group’s criminal justice reference series.

Schmalleger’s philosophy of both teaching and writing can be summed up in these words: “In order to communicate knowledge, we must first catch, then hold, a person’s interest–be it student, colleague, or policymaker. Our writing, our speaking, and our teaching must be relevant to the problems facing people today, and they must in some way help solve those problems.”

Schmalleger's 3rd Edition is the best yet--easy to read and expanded coverage.

There are many criminology textbooks on the market, but CRIMINOLOGY by Frank J. Schmalleger (Pearson, Inc.) is probably the best I have encountered, particularly when coupled with Pearson's MyCJLab supplement. I use this textbook in a course that I teach. While I regularly receive free desk copies of other Criminology textbooks, I have not been tempted to switch from Schmalleger's text since I began using it with the first edition. The current 3rd edition is an improvement on those two.

-READABILITY: The book is straightforward and easy to follow. While I would not say that it is written like a magazine (as is a competitor's book), it is still written in such a way that the reluctant student reader can easily follow. Definitions are in bold, headings and subheadings are excellent, and the book does not get bogged down in pointless details. Where relevant, Schmalleger mentions both classic and contemporary studies related to the topic, but puts these in context and chooses these studies judiciously. As criminology is such a vast field, it is clear that Schmalleger made great effort to write a succinct text.

-UPDATED FROM 2ND EDITION: The textbook recently went through a revision, and most of the changes are just updating statistics and adding some new studies. However, there was one major update that impressed me most. With modern science, we are able to more fully understand (potential) biological contributors to criminal behavior. This includes modern studies in genetics and neuroscience. Schmalleger expanded this textbook's biology chapter in the previous edition to two chapters on biological contributions in this one. The approach is excellent, as it acknowledges new scientific findings in the field rather than include them as an update afterthought.

-STUDENT FEEDBACK: Sometimes getting a student to read in a class is a difficult endeavor, but many of my students report that reading this book is not a challenge. They find it easy to follow but also like that the chapters are relatively brief compared to other texts. Students who use the eText often show me the highlights and notes they made, but the physical version of the text is light and easy to carry around.

-AUTHOR: Frank Schmalleger has written multiple books in the field spanning many years, so he has textbook writing down to a science. He is also responsive to feedback and makes changes accordingly. He is respected in the field and should continue churning out excellent texts.

Overall, in terms of criminology textbooks, Schmalleger's CRIMINOLOGY (3rd EDITION) is one that I would strongly recommend to any instructor seeking a book. I would also, however, recommend it to anyone with a general interest in criminology. It is an affordable (by textbook standards) introduction to such an important field.

About the Author
Halina Sierocka is an Assistant Professor at the Bialystok Centre of Legal English, Faculty of Law, University of Bialystok. Her research areas lie in legal discourse, English for Specific Purposes (ESP), Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and team teaching. She is the author of a number of articles and reviews on teaching English for Specific Purposes and English for Legal Purposes, and is also the author of the Legal English textbook for law students, Legal English - Niezbednik przyszlego prawnika, which received the European Language Label 2013 award granted to the most innovative language learning projects in each EU country every year.

I purchased this book to replace the AutoCAD 2010: ...

I purchased this book to replace the AutoCAD 2010: No Experience Required version I had once I upgraded to AutoCAD 2016. I had purchased the original book many years ago with the intention of teaching myself AutoCAD. So now that I have gotten around to doing that I started using the previous version until this book arrived. I switched books about half way through (right after Chapter 7). While the tutorial has hardly changed between the 2 versions (same cabin drawing), the step by step instructions were clearly written by 2 different authors. The author of the 2010 version, Jon McFarland, clearly spent significant more time reviewing his instructions and making sure that even the small steps were covered. Donnie Gladfelter, the author of the 2016 version, seems to have blown through the steps without consideration for the fact that this book was written for those without prior AutoCAD experience. Perhaps this is an editing issue but for a book written for a such a meticulous and precise subject, the mistakes and holes in the writing of this book are glaring. I will be switching back to the 2010 version and figure out the changes between 2010 and 2016 after I figure AutoCAD out.

Beware the 'WIWAKs' and the 'MARENTS'

I've been re-reading the book - The Kids Market: Myths and Realities, and once again I'm struck by the insight, and the thoroughness of the research. Dr. James U. McNeal has put together a book that truly is a must have for us in the business of marketing to kids.
I would like to talk a little about chapter 9 - 'Barriers to Understanding the Kids Market'. Dr. McNeal points out two caricatures of marketers targeting kids : The "WIWAKs" and the "Marents". The "WIWAKs" exemplify the "When I Was A Kid" approach to kids market strategy. Marents - on the other hand - base their kids market strategy on the fact that they are both marketers and parents. This supposedly gives them a special insight into the kids market.
Dr. McNeal then goes on to give a real gem of a formula: "C=f(P,E); that is, Children = function of (Parents, Environment). In long form, what children are, how they think and act ,are a function of both parental and environmental forces constantly at work, even before they were born." (pg. 111)
This is why the "Marent" approach to marketing is so potentially misleading. A marketers children are often more likely to reflect their parents' values than a true sense of the kids market.
This formula also points out the implicit need for accurate research and product testing to avoid basic marketing blunders such as: "Targeting all kids aged 2 - 12 with one ad message on one TV program, packaging salty snacks for kids in packages that don't cater to their limited dexterity, concept testing a product only among parents, offering premiums whose use requires adult supervision, and displaying product for kids in stores well above their eye level." (pg. 111)
In conclusion 'The Kids Market: Myths and Realities' is a must read for anyone interested in reaching the kids market. You can test your own knowledge by comparing your understanding of the kids market to the 27 myths and realities as presented by Dr. McNeal in this well researched and wonderfully presented book.
You also get lots of pie chart type marketing data research and charming drawing by children about their perceptions of the shopping experience. Dr. James U McNeal is a Professor of Marketing at Texas A&M University where he teaches courses in marketing and consumer behavior. He is also the author of 'Children as Consumers' and 'Kids as Customers'.
Marketers to the Kids Marketplace will find this book invaluable.

Insightful and well-organized, disturbing in places

Dr. McNeal is one of those rare professionals who both knows his material and knows how to write about it (or if he had a ghost writer, it was a darn good one). Kids Market is intelligent, easy to read and exceedingly well-laid-out. McNeal organizes his book around a long list of myths about children's marketing, which he debunks one by one in a catchy question-and-answer format. (QUESTION: The milk industry has spent millions marketing milk to kids, so why haven't they made it their favorite snack beverage? ANSWER: Because kids can't snack out of a three-gallon jug. Change the packaging, guys!) On top of that, one really gets the feeling that McNeal likes kids and respects them as customers and as people.

However, I found his chapter on ethics somewhat disturbing. He asks and answers several surface questions about what he considers to be unethical practices in children's advertising--such as showing toys in settings that make them look bigger and better than they are or showing snack foods giving kids superpowers--but the question, "Is it wrong to convince kids to buy things that they don't need?" is conspicuously absent.

There was one other lapse: When asked the question, "Are kids the object of too much advertising?" he answers, "Well, there isn't as much advertising as there seems to be," and defends his opinion well, but he does not actually answer the question of whether or not it is too much.

My reservations are more about marketing in general than about Dr. McNeal, and this is an excellent and entertaining book.

I am able to feel the pain of a woman who doesn’t feel comfortable walking down the street at night alone. No, I have never been a woman, but I have listened to those stories and tried to put myself there. Let’s just be honest. This generation does not talk about sex, race, or pain from our childhood. We ignore those topics and we ignore self-love. I never heard the word self-love when I was growing up. As a child, I also didn’t hear the word love much. I went on several spiritual journeys in my early twenties to discover the deepest version of self. What I present to you here is a continuation of the journey. I am happy, I am healed, and I am as healthy as I can be. Today, I am sharing a spiritual, emotional, and health journey with you inside of these lines.

An excellent book to start working with Delphi

Delphi Programming for Dummies is excellent. The book is structured very clearly. The reader is introduced to Delphi very carefully and smoothly. When no technical words are necessary, none are used. The language used is very natural and sometimes even funny. This makes this book actually pleasant to read. The great thing is that this book (as promised by the title) does explain a lot about the programming part of Delphi, and not just about the components (which are also described). A great way to start working with Delphi.
