About the Author
Howard Schilit, Ph.D., CPA, is the founder and chief executive officer of Schilit Forensics LLC. Dr. Schilit is a pioneer in the field of detecting accounting tricks in corporate financial reports that mislead investors. Howard was the founder and CEO of CFRA, a global forensic accounting research organization. He has been a leading spokesman before the US Congress, the SEC, and global media outlets about the causes and early warning signs of accounting tricks in public filings. Dr. Schilit began his career as an Associate Professor of Accounting at American University and continues to teach and lecture all over the world. Dr. Schilit holds his doctorate in Accounting from the University of Maryland.
Jeremy Perler, CFA, CPA, is the Director of Research at Schilit Forensics and co-author of Financial Shenanigans: How to Detect Accounting Gimmicks & Fraud in Financial Reports (3rd edition, 2010). Previously, Jeremy served as the in-house Forensic Accounting Analyst for CoatueManagement, a long/short equity hedge fund; Director of Research for CFRA; and auditor for PricewaterhouseCoopers. Great Book, but Important Sections of Second Edition Dropped

I should begin by saying that I completely agree with the previous five star reviews. This is a magnificent book, and the second edition had a great influence on my investing. All serious investors should read this.
I would like to draw attention though, to the changes made since the second edition. The second edition described seven basic shenanigans which, for the most part, manipulated earnings and revenue, as these are the headline numbers that the bulk of investors look at. The third edition covers the same shenanigans, though the sections have been re-written, and the examples have been changed and updated. The third edition adds sections on shenanigans to manipulate cash flow numbers (yes, this can be done) and metrics that investors use frequently. The new sections are worth the upgrade to me, though if you read widely in the area, you won't find much new. Mulford and Comiskey's Creative Cash Flow Reporting, for example, covers the same material as the section on cash flow.
Those who haven't read the second edition should be aware that portions of the second edition have been eliminated. The sections on "Problem Areas" and "Looking Back . . . Looking Forward" are gone, but the topics they deal with have either been absorbed into the rest of the text or can be dropped without great consequence. The section on "Techniques for Detecting Shenanigans" has also been dropped, and I believe that this is unfortunate. While some readers may already be familiar with common-size analysis, for example, many investors don't have formal education in accounting and could use the explanation and examples. It was this chapter of the second edition that promped me to create common-size balance sheets and income statements for all potential investments, and I've found the exercise invaluable, both for detection of possible shenanigans and for general understanding the companies I'm researching.
If you are new to this area of stock analysis, or new to accounting, I would recommend buying both the second and third editions. The second edition should be cheap, as used copies of older editions are not usually in high demand. The third edition gives investors more to look out for, but without a systematic way to apply the techniques, I doubt many will put their new found knowledge to good use.

Essential Tool for any Finance/Accounting Professional

As a financial accountant, I have special appreciation for "Financial Shenanigans" by Schilit and Perler. Like the preface mentions, this book truly provides the "post-mortem analysis" it promises. It clearly narrates the most infamous financial reporting failures in history (US, Europe, & Asia), and the lessons such fraudulent mistakes offer those who wish to learn. Not only does it serve as a quick reference for all possible fraudulent methods to date, but also as a review of core financial accounting principles (US GAAP) and basic performance ratio calculations.

In addition, it is intelligently written, and easy to follow and comprehend. More specifically, it also employs humor in a smart, witty manner. It does a great job of drawing in readers who appreciate reading up-to-date, practical accounting/finance material they can apply to their professions (outside of academia). Best of all, it isn't dry, but engaging!

I expect my copy will become worn and dog-eared within a short period of time, as this book has become my most trusted coworker and best companion at the office. I am looking forward to following these two authors and reading more of their upcoming work.

My personal opinion, of course, but perhaps more MBA's and senior executives ought to read this book and educate themselves! We're on to you, C-suite!

Great for the young hopeful...

A great book for intermediate students. My son is in his 3rd year and these short pieces are challenging enough to keep him on his toes but not so hard as to discourage. I'm also a violin student and I have to work a bit also. This is a great way to keep learning interesting.

A must for knifemakers

Consider this the Cliff Notes of steel metalurgy. It is an invaluable resource for those of us who make knives and other cutting tools. Forging and grinding a great looking knife with good geometry isn't even half of the story; manipulating the crystalin structure of the steel with heat is at least 75% of it. Steel sellection counts somewhat less. This book gives a good "in depth overview" of what steel and other ferrous alloys are, what their properties are, and how those properties can be used and manipulated. It gives an understanding of what is happening to the steel, not just a cookbook intruction of starting at point A and proceeding to the finished product. It gives knowledge of what to do when the cookbook fails and how to modify the instructions to make things come out better. It allows technique to evolve into art.

Steel is Real

Dr. Verhoeven has written a book a novice can easily understand. I've taken courses in college which covered materials and processes, yet I was not able to understand what Dr. V easily explains in Chapter 2 that anyone will understand and never forget. There are 17 chapters and 2 appendices which I believe should be mandatory for anyone wanting to understand steel.

About the Author
Gene S. Helfman is an Emeritus Professor of Ecology in the Odum School of Ecology, University of Georgia. He retired after 30 years of conducting research on and teaching about ichthyology, animal behavior, and conservation biology. His research focused on the behavioral ecology and conservation of fishes in lakes, streams, coastal oceans, and coral reefs. In addition to contributing to this textbook, Helfman in 2007 published a highly acclaimed reference and text, Fish Conservation: A Guide to Understanding and Restoring Global Aquatic Biodiversity and Fishery Resources. He received a BS from the University of California, an MS from the University or Hawaii, and a Ph.D. from Cornell University.

Bruce Collette is a Senior Scientist at the National Systematics Laboratory of the National Marine Fisheries Service based in the National Museum of Natural History, part of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. He studies the systematics and evolution of several groups of epipelagic fishes such as tunas, mackerels, halfbeaks, and needlefishes and benthic fishes such as toadfishes and has published over 250 papers on these and other fishes. He has co-authored books on fishes of the Gulf of Maine and Bermuda. He received his BS and PhD degrees at Cornell University.

Doug Facey is a Professor of Biology at Saint Michael's College in Vermont where he studies the ecology and physiology of fishes of Lake Champlain and its tributaries. One ongoing area of interest is fish diversity in lower tributaries, including some rare darters. Doug received his BS in Biology at the University of Maine-Orono, his MS in Zoology at the University of Vermont, and his PhD in Zoology at the University of Georgia.

Brian Bowen spent the summers of his youth snorkeling in Cape Cod Bay, where he learned to appreciate fishes. Dr Bowen is a researcher at Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology (University of Hawaii), with over two dozen research expeditions, and over 100 publications on the conservation genetics of fishes and other vertebrates. He holds a M.A. degree from Virginia Institute of Marine Science, a Ph.D. from University of Georgia, and is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Currently Dr. Bowen works on fish five days a week, and on the weekend prefers to go fishing.

The "Brusca and Brusca" of fish Biology?

I have been using Moyle and Cech (an Introduction to Ichthyology) for years as the standard text to recommend to undergraduate students interested in developing a solid knowledge of basic fish taxonomy/biology/ecology but I think Helfman et al is a much more student-friendly textbook. It is split into sections: Introduction, form function & ontogeny, taxonomy phylogeny and evolution, zoogeography genetics and adaptations, behaviour and ecology, the future of fishes (conservation). These sections a sub-divided into sensible chapters.

The writing style is clear, peppered with good references for further reading and the authors make good use of excellent figures. As well as the reference list there are supplemental reading recommendations. The authors make good use of boxes to highlight interesting areas, e.g. vicariance versus dispersal, should we eat farmed salmon? and finish off each chapter with a bullet point summary. Being a single book treatment of a vast subject there are some sections where I guess the need for brevity has enforced absences, e.g. there is no mention of the special properties of fish eye lenses in the vision section and the section on swimming seems a bit sparse (and would probably benefit from more use of diagrams).

In summary, this is an excellent text that will appeal to undergraduates and serve as a useful sourcebook for tutors.

One of the best textbooks on fish today. Gives a great overview of all the relevant topics going into detail in the places where it is best needed. If you want to know anything about fish this is the perfect place to start and if you are going to be teaching a class on fish, this is the textbook for you!

A great book for all to read

An excellent ending to the rule of three. I enjoyed the entirety of the series and this would be no exception. Like the last book, Eric Walters made sure this book was just as great as the first. Yet I felt that Eric Walters gave Erin Mills too easy conditions and the final major battle was laughably easy.
Still, all things considered this book continued to help us understand what to do when an actual blackout hits our world. Walters was at least generous enough to have some death in his books. I liked many characters like Herb, Brett, and Erine and any engagement has action-packed descriptions. This book has made the great ending that truly ends it all.

Well worth the wait

This book was delayed time and again, but it is well worth the wait. This is by far one of the best Black Library releases. Malleus takes place nearly 100 years after the first book Xenos. The novel is plotted and executed in the fashion of Xenos and works just as well. The plot of Malleus deals more with the machinations of rival inquisitors and shows the reader why the inquisition is so feared. Malleus is especially interesting to those familiar with his other books. Abnetts first book First and Only is referenced several times (inquisitor Heldane is a villain of sorts in First. the Mechanicus ship Mons Olympus is too.)The book is also noticably longer than other Black Library releases, but it still feels rushed, especially the final battle which is ridiculously short and dissapointing, these two factors alone drop the rating. And judging by the titles of the first two books the next and final book will be titled HERETICUS.

Very Good Book!

Abnett has written an excellent follow up to his first book "Xenos". The plot of this novel is very well woven together and surprisingly intricate but as a previous reviewer points out it does feel rather rushed especially at the end. I've read this is because of the restrictions by the Black Library on story length but I can't confirm this. I liked this book better then "Xenos" because it gives a glimpse into the inner life of the Inquisition and all its many problems. I only gave it 4 stars because the story line is rushed. It sets up nicely for the 3rd book. Bring it on Mr Abnett!

Not as good as Xenos

Malleus is the second book of the Eisenhorn Trilogy. Malleus isn't as good of a story as Xenos but still a very good read. If you have not read Xenos then definitely read that book first. Also if you are not already a fan of Warhammer 40,000 be prepared to slug through the first 50-100 pages as the book throws a lot of names and events at you that could be tough to deal with if you are not already familiar with the 40K universe. Overall a good, well written sci-fi yarn.

About the Author

Dr. Shigeo Shingo along with Frederick Taylor, Henry Ford and Taiichi Ohno are probably the four greatest manufacturing minds in the last 100 years. Dr. Shingo was born in 1909 in Saga City, Japan, graduated from Saga Technical High School and earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Yamanashi Technical College and received an honorary doctorate degree from Utah State University. He taught over 3000 Toyota engineers in the principles stated in this new book Fundamental Principles of Lean Manufacturing.

Dr. Shingo authored over 20 books, eight in English:

• A Study of the Toyota Production System
• Revolution in Manufacturing: The SMED System
• Zero Quality Control: Source Inspection and the Poka-Yoke System
• The Sayings of Shigeo Shingo: Key Strategies for Plant Improvement
• Non-Stock Production: The Shingo System for Continuous Improvement, and
