A user-friendly approach to understanding ecological models

I have used the text, Ecological Dynamics, for two graduate-level courses in ecological modeling. I have found it to be an excellent introduction into the realm of mathematical modeling, with plenty of detail to launch more advanced inquiries into the subject material. The authors use actual models as the means for presenting the tools and mechanisms behind mathematical modeling. They use a balanced combination of qualitative explanations of ecological theory and underlying assumptions in addition to more quantitative analyses. There are case studies throughout the book which serve as useful ways in which students can apply learned skills to model organismal growth, trophic interactions, metapopulations, and ecosystem dynamics. Not having a strong undergraduate background in such material, I've come to appreciate the approach taken towards modeling in Ecological Dynamics.

Originally published in 1955, "The Cone-Gatherers" is set in the middle of World War II on a country estate in Scotland. The estate's wood is to be cut down soon to provide wood for the war effort, and two men have been sent into the wood by the forestry service to collect cones for seed. The men are brothers, and the younger is a simple-minded but very empathetic hunchback with "a face like Lord Byron". Through no fault of their own, the brothers acquire the irrational hatred of the estate's gamekeeper. The wood, itself lying under the shadow of ruin, quickly becomes a dangerous and mysterious setting in which the problem of evil plays out to tragedy.
Jenkin's short novel is the stuff of high literature and evokes associations with Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men" and the bold themes of Joseph Conrad. Also, the novel exhibits a strong and welcome moral sense not often seen modern fiction today. It addresses the intense issues of character and virtue also seen, for instance, in the works of the mid-century Oxford group "the Inklings", especially the novels Charles Williams (such as "The Descent into Hell" and "All Hallows"), though without the supernatural element. As a story of genuine, concentrated pathos, "The Cone-Gatherers" is the sort of haunting novel that brings the reader to a stark confrontation with the truth of human nature.

DO NOT READ THE INTRODUCTION!!!!!!

This is a very powerful book. It definitely provokes thought on many layers. It is understandable why it would be required reading for high schoolers in Scotland. It is a classic in my opinion, but DO NOT READ THE INTRODUCTION!! Some imbecile wrote the introduction with the worst spoiler ever!!!! It is as if he thought everyone had already read this book. If you like to read and enjoy a story unfolding and do not want to know how it ends before you even begin, then do not read even the first sentence of the introduction. I have never seen anything like it. The story gets a five star, but the publisher should get a single star or, even better yet, should be banned from the world to ever publish another book again. Let publishers that have a brain print the classics. Fools! How idiotic. Do you get the feeling this bugged me? Well, it did!!

Great tool for Beginning Students of History

How do you research and write about history? This is always a good question for history students. At what point do you put away the MLA methods and begin to work with historical style in order to conduct research within this discipline? Benjamin has compiled a good book on what students should be doing in order to become historians. One of the tasks instructors face in college is transforming students into historians. That is what they are doing in those classes. They are learning to think like a historian in order to find and use facts in developing interpretations of the past.

There are many books on the market concerning how to be a historian. This book is one of the better ones. It is used on college campuses for students. Everything a beginning student of history needs is in this book. Good attention is paid to the research and writing elements of history which are critical for a historian. Sections on what historians do and why are included which is wonderful because some instructors do not bother to explain these things. Two appendices are included with sources for beginning historians which is worth the price of the book alone. So often budding historians are hesitant to start because they have no idea where to look for information. As Benjamin points out, often it is right under our nose.

All in all this is a good book for students of history to have. When coupled with the latest edition of Turabian’s A Manual for Writers, the pair become a highly effective duo for all historians.
