From Timothy Zahn, Hugo Award winner and New York Times bestselling author of two landmark Star Wars series, comes anoriginal new tale featuring a renegade space pilot, his unusual alien partner, and an unknown cargo that can change the course of galactic history.
Jordan McKell has a problem with authority. Unfortunately for him, the iron-fisted authority of the powerful Patthaaunutth controls virtually every aspect of galactic shipping. In order to survive, Jordan ekes out a living dabbling in interstellar smuggling for outlaw concerns that represent the last vestiges of free trade in the galaxy. So when Jordan and his partner, Ixil--an alien with two ferret-like "outhunters" linked to his neural system--are hired by a mysterious gentleman to fly a ship and its special cargo to Earth, they jump at the job.
Caution has never been one of Jordan's strong suits. But this time he may have taken on more than even he can handle. The ship, Icarus, turns out to be a ramshackle hulk, the ragtag crew literally picked up off the street, and the cargo so secret, it's sealed in a special container that takes up most of the cramped and ill-designed ship. As if that weren't bad enough, it looks like the authorities already suspect something is afoot, there's a saboteur aboard, and the Icarus appears to be shaking apart at the seams.
It doesn't seem as if things could get any worse. That is, until a beautiful crew member helps McKell uncover the true nature of the cargo he's carrying. With his enemies closing in on the lumbering Icarus, the unknown saboteur still aboard, and authorities on Earth pressured to turn them in, McKell and Ixil become fugitives. Their only chance is to stay one step ahead of their pursuers as they try to make it home.
A bold and epic novel filled with unrelenting action and a good dose of humor, The Icarus Hunt is a wild hyperspace romp through the galaxy.

Amazon.com Review
Jordan McKell thinks he's pretty unlucky, but most of us would gladly trade places with him. He's a freelance star-freighter captain who plies the hyperspace folds between worlds, trading exotic goods and meeting bizarre aliens. His latest job, to pilot the Icarus and its sealed cargo to earth, seems simple enough, but it rapidly turns into a crisis of interstellar proportions. The man who hired him goes missing, governments and the underworld alike put a price on the Icarus and on McKell's head, and one of his crew is murdered. He'll need to call upon his wits, his courage, and even a few tricks if he wants to survive.
Space opera veteran Timothy Zahn, a Hugo award winner and author of the bestselling Star Wars Thrawn trilogy, brings us a tale that's as convoluted and complex as a hyperdrive motor. Although there's plenty of action both in space and on the ground, The Icarus Hunt is primarily a murder mystery. Chapter by chapter, even page by page, the list of suspects and their motivations grows and evolves, constantly shifting as McKell relentlessly cuts through webs of deception and subterfuge. But the murder is only the opening move in a game that could alter the power structure of hundreds of solar systems. Zahn always provides an entertaining ride through the galaxy, and readers will find him very much in his element with this book. --J.B. Peck
From Library Journal
Independent space shipper (i.e., smuggler) Jordan McKell accepts a contract to deliver a sealed cargo to Earth aboard a ship of unknown origin and dubious quality. After the suspicious death of a crew member and several attempts to "acquire" his cargo, McKell realizes that he has become the center of a conspiracy that pits him against a powerful race of aliens who control galactic trade and aspire to even more. The latest sf adventure by the author of the Star WarsTM Thrawn trilogy features fast-paced action; a tight, no-frills plot; and a quick-thinking, resourceful hero. A good choice for most sf collections.

A long time in the future, in a spiral arm of our galaxy that is far, far away (some things don't change), retired-military-pilot-turned-smuggler Jordan McKell and Ixil, his nonhuman partner, are contracted to deliver a mysterious cargo to Earth aboard a bizarre starship, the Icarus. Zahn is the man who put Star Wars fiction on the map, but in this book, he provides only a Star Wars^-flavored universe. Yet he has developed it along his own lines, using the full range of his vast talent for action sf. In this future, the top dog among star-traveling races is the Patth, who possess superfast stardrive. Soon it is dosclosed that the Icarus carries--in fact, is--a serious threat to Patth dominance, and the Patth and everybody they can pressure into it, as well as criminal overlords to whom McKell is indebted, are chasing him, Ixil, and their motley crew across the starscape. In the process, casualties occur among sympathetic characters, not just faceless stormtroopers. Drugs prove dangerous, wounds hurt, and the dead are mourned. Well up to Zahn's high standard, this is one of the better novels in some time for readers moving from Star Wars and its clones to other sf and, as such, is highly recommended. Roland Green

like pretty much every other book I have read by ...

The Icarus Hunt is a stand alone science fiction novel by Timothy Zahn. It has elements of interstellar intrigue, murder mystery, quick thinking, and strategic posturing. This, like pretty much every other book I have read by Zahn is a real page turner with enough elements to keep you guessing to the very end. I would recommend this book to any one interested in any of the categories of books listed above.
For those more interested in philosophical questions and moral delemmas I would point them to Timothy Zahn's other stand alone book Soulminder. Happy reading.

Sci-fi thriller a throwback to Alistair MacLean classics
By Amazon Customer
"The Icarus Hunt" was a recommendation to me by a friend whose advise I trust enough to take. This is important, as I confess to not being the biggest Timothy Zahn fan otherwise. His recommendation was well-given, though, and (as a Drill Sgt. might say) I was born again hard.
The novel was a pleasant surprise, full of interesting characters in a fleshed-out science fiction universe. Most of all, Zahn has created a first-rate espionage thriller that brings to mind the best yarns of Alistair MacLean and John LeCarre.
The main character, Jordan McKell, is a science-fiction version of the same world-weary protagonists we expect to see Richard Burton playing on the big screen. Surrounding him is a labyrinthine plot made all the more snake-like by a supporting cast whose loyalties are always in question and never what they seem. It's all a vintage turn on the genre, with the sci-fi twist and some well-crafted writing by veteran author Zahn.
The thrust of the story concerns a crew of professionals, strangers to each other, hastily recruited to fly a ship from a far-flung planet back to Earth with a sealed, mysterious cargo and their employer disappearing when it is time to leave. To give away any more, as with all good thrillers, would be of no service to the reader. Suffice to say, if you are a science fiction fan and, what's more, if you are a fan of the espionage thriller, "The Icarus Hunt" is a supurb entry into both genres.

The overlooked aspect
By Bruce Wheelock
I'm surprised to discover it, but there is a marvelous aspect to this book that most reviewers miss. There can be no question but that Timothy Zahn's set out to write the science fiction novel that Alistair McLean would have written if he had ever turned his hand that genre. Zahn has done an impressive job of creating a novel that draws upon McLean characters, plots, and style. Jordan McKell builds from Philip Calvert, Johnny Harlow, John Deakin, and more. His partner, Ixil, incorporates Hunslett and Jablonsky and Schaffer and others. The villains and their machinations are woven into a tapestry drawn from "Puppet On a Chain", "The Satan Bug", and "Way to Dusty Death", to name three. The surprise and double-surprise at the end is classic McLean style--and the climax is a marvelous transliteration of "When Eight Bells Toll". Oh, and the Uncle Arthur of "Icarus Hunt" is...well...the Uncle Arthur of "When Eight Bells Toll". But make no mistake--Zahn draws from McLean, but he gives us clever and well-crafted twists of his own. Excellent job all around, and quite a tribute to a masterful writer.
