Norm Wright's handbook for pre-engaged couples is one of the best ways to help a couple prepare for marriage. I've found that the longer I've been married, the more I appreciate all the different topics these 12-14 chapters cover. I use it for pre-marriage counseling and have found that this book is a great discussion starter.

A superb textbook on the development of the Romance family

I just finished the book Romance Languages - A Historical Introduction (RL), and want to just say, "Wow." This was a superb book, and I take great pleasure in recommending it. Specifically, for someone who likes language(s), and finds the processes that drive sound change and morphology interesting, this is an excellent read.

From the start, RL singles out five languages to base its comparative studies on, French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian and Spanish. There are in fact other Romance languages in existence, and the distinction (or lack thereof) between a dialect and language plays a part in the discussion. But these five are chosen because they have gone on to become national languages. That being said, Romanian and Portuguese are treated sparingly through the bulk of the text, Romanian more so than Portuguese. However, each of these receives its own chapter to make up for this, owing to the distinctive historical trajectory each language takes, differentiating them from the main stream of Romance and Popular Latin. The Romanian chapter leaves quite a bit open for discussion. It also makes a number of tentative claims, which is expected since historical reconstruction is not at all clear for this language.

The Popular Latin presented in this book was given quite a bit of support, and is essential for understanding the changes that drove sound change from Latin towards the distinctive modern Romance languages. However, since much of this transmission was oral, the book is continually having to tag word forms with an asterisk, indicating that there is no direct textual evidence of the form. Obviously one should read this text and understand that there is still a lot of study in this field, with competing opinions about many of the historical changes in specific forms (and the authors are careful to make this clear).

This book is aimed at students with some linguistic study under their belt. It is not as dense as some texts I have seen that demonstrate the phonology and morphology of a language, nor is it an easy read for someone without a linguistic background. Prior study of Latin is expected (I am self-taught), and some prior study of linguistics is helpful, as it relies heavily on IPA to describe forms. I don't have as good a grasp on IPA as I would like, but I have studied many different languages and thus have covered articulation and phonetics more contextually. I found this book challenging, without being overwhelming. In fact, by the middle, I had a much better handle on IPA symbols that relate to the Romance family. Learning in context is a powerful tool, without doubt.

As phonetic and morphological change processes are named, they are given good descriptions (and each of these terms is included in a guide near the back). This was very helpful. Not as much time is spent on terminology for articulation, and this was a little bit more problematic as it is an important concept for dealing with sound changes. However, RL tended to describe changes in terms of the processes that occurred rather than the physical articulation that allowed or promoted those changes, so the emphasis on process vocabulary makes sense.

The book is littered with practice exercises and inline questions to force grappling with the information. The end of each chapter provides additional questions that require more analysis and creative thought about the processes that have been looked at. These were excellent, and make this text more than just descriptive. However, the major failure of this book, in my mind, is there is no answer key. Other than the inline questions, no answers are provided for practice exercises or chapter-end exercises. This made the exercises interesting, but something short of what might have been hoped for.

Finally, the bibliography at the end is extensive and will allow the interested reader to delve where they will. As someone who read this on his own time (not as part of a linguistics course or program), that is very helpful.

A useful textbook for the historical evolution of the major Romance languages

ROMANCE LANGUAGES: A Historical Introduction by Ti Alkire and Carol Rosen is a textbook describing the phonological and morphological changes that produced the major varieties of Romance out of late Vulgar Latin. The textbook assumes prior experience with linguistics (namely a general linguistics course and a historical linguistics course) and at least a couple of years of Classical Latin. There's quite a few Romance languages, some of which are little-known. The authors have chosen to focus on five in this textbook: Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian. Occitan, Rhaeto-Romance, Aromanian and Dalmatian, not to mention the host of regional Italian dialects that could be viewed as separate languages, are thus not covered. The first eight chapters cover Italian, French and Spanish together. The remaining two languages, Portuguese and Romanian, get their own chapters, though the Italian-French-Spanish portion is a necessary prerequisite as terminology introduced in the first portion of the book is frequently referred to. The final chapters cover the formation of the Romance lexicon and the timeline of the emergence of the Romance languages.

It is nice to see Romanian covered in such detail, with some mention even of dialectal features and obscure verb conjugations. Unfortunately the authors have unquestioningly adopted Dacian Continuity Theory -- the belief that Romanians are descendants of the indigenous population vanquished by Trajan, instead of migrants from considerably further south who reached their present home nearly a millennium later. This leads the authors to make all kinds of claims about what kind of Latin "reached Dacia".

While I read the book outside of a course, I nonetheless enjoyed its textbook features. There are exercises at the end of each chapter that let you flex your diachronic linguistics muscles, and the authors present a good many mnemonic devices to help you retain the sound changes. The bibliography at the end will spur you on to more specialized treatment of these historical phenomena.

Very satisfying insights into the origin and evolution of the romance languages

Authors Akire and Rosen provide the reader with very satisfying insights into the origin and evolution of the romance languages. This book opens with the reduction of the nine-vowel system to the seven-vowel system, using Italian, Spanish, and French as examples (pp.9-15). With this discussion, the focus continues on these three particular romance languages through the first half of the book.

A very interesting example of consonant weakening is seen to correspond to the initial “f” in Spanish taking on the value of a silent “h.” In this way the Latin “ferro” (iron) transforms into “hierro.” This change is explained in terms of the claim that “h” and “f” were considered allophones (i.e. variants of the same basic sound) by early Spanish speakers (p.51).

French is given as an example of some the most surprising and far-ranging changes. The palatalized labials “via,” “vie,” and “bia” that terminate Latin words are transformed into “ge” in French. In this way “serviente” (assistant) becomes “sergeant” and “rabia” becomes “rage” (p.71).

The authors also provide the solution to a puzzle that had commanded my attention when I first started learning Italian: that of the third person singular and plural endings brought on by the conditional tense. It is shown that what began in Latin as “cantare habebat” (would sing) collapses into “catarebbe” in Italian (pp.171-172).

The second half of the book discusses the evolution of Portuguese and Romanian as well as a brief narrative on the emergence of the romance vernaculars. An index of linguistic terms is also provided.

About the Author
John D. Hood, II was born and raised in the foothills of North Carolina. Growing up Mr. Hood would spend as much time possible enjoying the great outdoors. While in college he earned his degree in Emergency Medical Science and now works as a Paramedic. To this day he still enjoys spending as much time possible in the woods or on the water. In 2008 he started making custom handmade duck calls which grew from a hobby into a small business called Lower Creek Game Calls, LLC. He now offers custom calls in waterfowl, deer, turkey, predator, and small game. His custom calls are now being used from coast to coast and everywhere between.

A True Piece of Americana

There are few hunting experiences more satisfying than hailing a distant flock of mallards with a highball and watching the birds cup their wings and turn in unison as the sound reaches them. By allowing waterfowlers to communicate directly with ducks, calling fosters an intimate relationship between hunters and their quarry that elevates the sport to a higher level."

This beautiful book, a loving and well-researched treatment of an Americana niche art form, itself elevates our understanding of how hand made calls are made, and those who make them, to a higher level. It reviews American call makers from around the country, with a focus on what makes their products unique. While many call makers have become quite successful and advanced to mass production and a central role in what is now a multimillion dollar industry, this text focuses on those who have continued hand made production, with perhaps less financial reward, but with a possibly equally rewarding relentless commitment to quality and innovation. Some of the calls described here have never been published elsewhere.

Rich illustrations and an intimate atmosphere create the feeling of a living community of American artisans passionate about this particular artistic and functional product. More importantly, the reader the reader feels like a close member of that community by the last page. A great read (or even better gift) for anyone interested in hunting, Americana art and artisans, the remarkable experience of humans who can truly communicate with animals, and quality American handmade tools. Highly recommended.

Eye Opening Event in Call Making History

Let it be known throughout the world of turkey call collectors and hunters alike, this book is definitely worth it's price and the time utilized in reading it from front to back! Within its pages are some of the "unknowns" soon to be "known" call makers found all throughout this country, folks who have found a true passion in keeping this wonderful heritage alive, by creating their works of "art" one at a time. Also found inside its covers are well known call makers who show case their talents unlike any before, even though being fueled by the "masters" past. John's work was tiring but his tenacity was unending and the results are seen in the stories and the pictures found from page to page. When you pick this book up, try to make a trip to the NWTF Grand Nationals in Nashville Tennessee in February 2014 and get it signed by as many of the call makers you can, think of the memories. And if you happen on to page 147 you'll see this old timer's work....pappy

Beautiful, Intellectual, a surprising find

I had to leave a review because the rest weren't really fair. I mean in all honestly when I started this book I too thought it was boring. But never one to not finish a book I kept reading. How glad I am to have. The story is intricate. It weaves in and out of the secret love of two past writers and two modern day individuals who discover this love through the literary work they left behind. The book references many poems that paints the imagination and taps into emotions that make up for the sometime wordy details. I appreciated the beautiful love that develops between the lead male and female. This is a type of book that fills your mind, not a romance you'd expect, but definitely in a good way. Brilliant writing, brilliant fleshing of characters. A very intelligently delicious book--once you get past the slow beginning.

Principles, mechanisms and instruments for drafting international commercial contracts

The reviewed book belongs to Larry DiMatteo, a famous expert in the field of international commercial contracts. It is noteworthy that DiMatteo is a very prolific scholar and authored such books as: International Business Law: a transactional approach (2nd ed. Thomson West) (2006), Law of International Sales: a critical analysis of the CISG (Cambridge University Press) (2005), Law of international business transactions (West Publishing) (2003), Equitable Law of Contracts: principles and standards (Transnational Publishers 2001) and The Law of International Contracting (Kluwer Law International, 2000).

As is evident from titles, the majority of the books are devoted to practical aspects of drafting international commercial contracts. It is in fact an illustration of significant experience and presence of professional skills and knowledge in drafting international commercial contracts.
The book is written in an accessible and plain language. The author adduced a lot of interesting examples from practice and case law, which makes the book very practical and useful for practicing lawyers.

The author coherently discusses the principles of drafting international commercial contracts, focusing on Bermina Distributors v. Bemina Sewing Machines 646 F.2d 434 (1981). According to the materials of this case, a dispute arose as a result of ambiguous clause about change of prices in a contract, which led to uncontrolled increase of total price of contract by defendant.

Adducing this example, the author warns about dangers of such clauses and stipulations and advises parties to take into account such risks when drafting contracts.

Another remarkable chapter in the book is a chapter devoted to frequently used clauses in international contracts. The importance of this chapter is explained by the fact that the author lists and describes such clauses of contract as preamble, definition, contract price, taxation, delivery terms, payment terms, merger clause, amendment of contract, choice of law clauses, arbitration clause, etc.

The book discusses such important topics as a sale of goods, distribution agreements, and intellectual property licensing agreements, joint venture agreements, confidentiality and electronic contracts.

The books pays specific attention to the matters of Russian law. Thus, for instance, in chapter 10, devoted to licensing intellectual property, author discusses review of Russian law of intellectual properties. In chapter 5, devoted to national legislations, regulating sale of goods, author discusses relevant provisions of Civil Code of Russian Federation. Beside Russia, the author pays special attention to Australia, China and Germany.

In appendices, the author provides the full texts of UN Convention on contracts for international sale of goods 1980, also known as Vienna Convention 1980, UN Convention on Limitation Periods in international sale of goods, UNIDRUA Principles on international commercial contracts, European Contract Law Principles 198, European Model Law on sale of goods and Chinese Contract law (excerpts).
Unfortunately, the author does not provide the texts of such important instruments as UCP 600, Incoterms 2010 and Standby credit convention. However, it should be noted that absence of these documents does not diminish the value of the book.

The book is recommended to all lawyers, interested in international sale of goods, international payments, international commercial arbitration, intellectual property, company law and electronic contracts.
